WINCHEL NEAR CLEAN SWEEP AT LAKEPORT SPEEDWAY

4/24/04

In the first season appearance of the Legends Cars of the Pacific at the Lakeport Speedway, veteran driver Frankie Winchel of Sebastopol had a near clean sweep as he first set fast time of 140.13 seconds, won the preliminary heat race, and came from the back of the pack to capture the 30 lap feature Saturday night. Ryan Mosher's trophy dash win spoiled a perfect night for Winchel.

Thirteen Legends Cars took the initial green flag with pole setter David Fisher pulling out in front of Jack Wulff Humphrey. When Fisher's car pushed high, Humphrey closed the door and stole the lead on the fourth lap. The following round saw the yellow displayed when long low Ted Studley, coming all the way from the state of Georgia, spun and hit the wall in turn three.

When racing resumed, Humphrey led the field around the oval but was pressured on each pass by David Winchel. Winchel passed Humphey on lap six as Rick Andrews, heat race winner Ryan Mosher and Frankie Winchel were working their ways through the pack. Mosher passed Andrews for third on lap 19 just before the race was slowed a second time for a Pete Currin spin.

The restart saw Mosher swap places with Humphrey, and on 22 F. Winchel passed Humphrey. Mosher lost control and spun into the infield on the white flag lap allowing F. Winchel to take over the lead and win the race. D. Winchel finished second with Humphrey a solid third, Fred Clement fourth and Rick Zollman fifth.

The Legends Cars return to the Lakeport Speedway on Memorial Day weekend for the 7th annual Robinson Rancheria Bingo & Casino INEX Spring Nationals. This 3-day event will be a qualifying race for the INEX Nationals that will be held in Las Vegas in October.
